When the sky bursts open, |

Transliteration |
waathinat lirabbiha wahuqqat |

And hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord, and it must needs (do so);- |
Saheeh International |
And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] |

And obeys its Lord and it must. |

And it hearkeneth to its Lord, and is duteous, |

and obeys its Lord as it must, |

waitha alardu muddat |

And when the earth is flattened out, |

And when the earth has been extended |

And when the earth is stretched, |

And when the earth shall be stretched forth. |

when the earth flattens out, |

ﭨ ﭩ ﭪ ﭫﭬ
Transliteration |
waalqat ma feeha watakhallat |

And casts forth what is within it and becomes (clean) empty, |
Saheeh International |
And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it] |
Shakir |
And casts forth what is in it and becomes empty, |
Daryabadi |
And shall cast forth that which is therein, and shall become empty. |

and casts out all that is within it and becomes empty; |

Transliteration |
waathinat lirabbiha wahuqqat |

Yusuf Ali |
And hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord,- and it must needs (do so);- (then will come Home the full reality). |

ﭱ ﭲ ﭳ ﭴ ﭵ ﭶ ﭷ ﭸﭹ
Transliteration |
ya ayyuha alinsanu innaka kadihun ila rabbika kadhan famulaqeehi |

Yusuf Ali |
O thou man! Verily thou art ever toiling on towards thy Lord- painfully toiling,- but thou shalt meet Him. |
Saheeh International |
O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. |
Shakir |
O man! surely you must strive (to attain) to your Lord, a hard striving until you meet Him. |
Daryabadi |
O man! verily thou art toiling toward thy Lord a painful toiling, and art about to meet Him. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
O man, having striven hard towards your Lord, you shall meet Him: |

Transliteration |
faama man ootiya kitabahu biyameenihi |

Then he who is given his Record in his right hand, |

Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, |

Then as to him who is given his book in his right hand, |

Then as to him who shall be given his book in his right hand - |

he who is given his record in his right hand |

Transliteration |
fasawfa yuhasabu hisaban yaseeran |

Soon will his account be taken by an easy reckoning, |
Saheeh International |
He will be judged with an easy account |
Shakir |
He shall be reckoned with by an easy reckoning, |

His account shall presently be taken by an easy reckoning. |

shall have an easy reckoning |

Transliteration |
wayanqalibu ila ahlihi masrooran |

Yusuf Ali |
And he will turn to his people, rejoicing! |
Saheeh International |
And return to his people in happiness. |
Shakir |
And he shall go back to his people joyful. |
Daryabadi |
And he shall return Unto his people joyfully. |

and he shall return to his people, joyfully, |

waamma man ootiya kitabahu waraa thahrihi |

But he who is given his Record behind his back,- |

But as for he who is given his record behind his back, |

And as to him who is given his book behind his back, |

And as to him who shall be given his book from behind his back- |

but as for him whose record shall be given to him from behind his back, |

Transliteration |
fasawfa yadAAoo thubooran |

Soon will he cry for perdition, |
Saheeh International |
He will cry out for destruction |
Shakir |
He shall call for perdition, |
Daryabadi |
He shall presently call for death, |

he will pray for utter destruction |

Transliteration |
wayasla saAAeeran |

Yusuf Ali |
And he will enter a Blazing Fire. |
Saheeh International |
And [enter to] burn in a Blaze. |

And enter into burning fire. |
Daryabadi |
And he shall roast into a Blaze. |

and he will enter the blazing flame. |

ﮘ ﮙ ﮚ ﮛ ﮜﮝ
Transliteration |
innahu kana fee ahlihi masrooran |

Yusuf Ali |
Truly, did he go about among his people, rejoicing! |
Saheeh International |
Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness; |
Shakir |
Surely he was (erstwhile) joyful among his followers. |
Daryabadi |
Verily he was among his people joyous. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
He used to be happy with his own people; |

ﮞ ﮟ ﮠ ﮡ ﮢﮣ
Transliteration |
innahu thanna an lan yahoora |

Yusuf Ali |
Truly, did he think that he would not have to return (to Us)! |
Saheeh International |
Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allah]. |
Shakir |
Surely he thought that he would never return. |
Daryabadi |
Verily he imagined that he would not be back. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
for he never thought that he would have to return [to God]. |

Transliteration |
bala inna rabbahu kana bihi baseeran |

Yusuf Ali |
Nay, nay! for his Lord was (ever) watchful of him! |
Saheeh International |
But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever of him, Seeing. |
Shakir |
Yea! surely his Lord does ever see him. |
Daryabadi |
Yea! his Lord had ever been beholding him. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
But he will indeed! His Lord was ever watching him. |

fala oqsimu bialshshafaqi |

So I do call to witness the ruddy glow of Sunset; |

So I swear by the twilight glow |

But nay! I swear by the sunset redness, |

I swear by the afterglow of sunset, |

I swear by the glow of sunset, |

waallayli wama wasaqa |

The Night and its Homing; |

And [by] the night and what it envelops |

And the night and that which it drives on, |

And by the night and that which it driveth together, |

by the night and what it covers, |

Transliteration |
waalqamari itha ittasaqa |

And the Moon in her fullness: |

And [by] the moon when it becomes full |

And the moon when it grows full, |

And by the moon when she becometh full. |

and the moon when it grows full, |

ﯘ ﯙ ﯚ ﯛﯜ
Transliteration |
latarkabunna tabaqan AAan tabaqin |

Yusuf Ali |
Ye shall surely travel from stage to stage. |
Saheeh International |
[That] you will surely experience state after state. |
Shakir |
That you shall most certainly enter one state after another. |
Daryabadi |
Surely ye shall ride layer upon layer. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
you will progress from stage to stage. |

ﯝ ﯞ ﯟ ﯠﯡ
Transliteration |
fama lahum la yuminoona |

Yusuf Ali |
What then is the matter with them, that they believe not?- |
Saheeh International |
So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe, |
Shakir |
But what is the matter with them that they do not believe, |
Daryabadi |
What aileth them then, that they believe not, |
Wahiduddin Khan |
What is wrong with them that they do not believe? |

ﯢ ﯣ ﯤ ﯥ ﯦ ﯧﯨﯩ
Transliteration |
waitha quria AAalayhimu alquranu la yasjudoona |

Yusuf Ali |
And when the Qur'an is read to them, they fall not prostrate, |
Saheeh International |
And when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah]? |
Shakir |
And when the Quran is recited to them they do not make obeisance? |
Daryabadi |
And that, when the Qur'an is read Unto them, they prostrate not them-selves! |
Wahiduddin Khan |
When the Quran is read to them, why do they not fall to their knees? |

|
|
ﯪ ﯫ ﯬ ﯭﯮ
Transliteration |
bali allatheena kafaroo yukaththiboona |
|---|---|
Yusuf Ali |
But on the contrary the Unbelievers reject (it). |
Saheeh International |
But those who have disbelieved deny, |
Shakir |
Nay! those who disbelieve give the lie to the truth. |
Daryabadi |
Yea those who disbelieve belie. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
Indeed, those who are bent on denying the truth reject it— |

|
|
|
ﯯ ﯰ ﯱ ﯲﯳ
Transliteration |
waallahu aAAlamu bima yooAAoona |
|---|---|
Yusuf Ali |
But Allah has full knowledge of what they secrete (in their breasts) |
Saheeh International |
And Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves. |
Shakir |
And Allah knows best what they hide, |
Daryabadi |
Whereas Allah knoweth best that which they cherish. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
God is quite aware of what they are storing in their hearts. |

fabashshirhum biAAathabin aleemin |

So announce to them a Penalty Grievous, |
Saheeh International |
So give them tidings of a painful punishment, |
Shakir |
So announce to them a painful punishment~ |
Daryabadi |
Wherefore announce thou Unto them a torment afflictive. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
Therefore, give them the news of a painful punishment. |

ﯸ ﯹ ﯺ ﯻ ﯼ ﯽ ﯾ ﯿ ﰀﰁ
Transliteration |
illa allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum ajrun ghayru mamnoonin |
|---|---|
Yusuf Ali |
Except to those who believe and work righteous deeds: For them is a Reward that will never fail. |
Saheeh International |
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted. |
Shakir |
Except those who believe and do good; for them is a reward that shall never be cut off. |
Daryabadi |
But those who believe and work righteous works, theirs shall be a hire unending. |
Wahiduddin Khan |
But for those who believe and do good works; for them there shall be a never-ending reward. |
