    Transliteration

    thikru rahmati rabbika AAabdahu zakariyya

    Yusuf Ali

    (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His servant Zakariya.

    Saheeh International

    [This is] a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah

    Shakir

    A mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakariya.

    Daryabadi

    Mention of the mercy of thy Lord to His bondman Zakariyya.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    This is an account of your Lord’s mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah,

    • ﭙ ﭚ ﭛ ﭜ ﭝﭞ

    Transliteration

    ith nada rabbahu nidaan khafiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret,

    Saheeh International

    When he called to his Lord a private supplication.

    Shakir

    When he called upon his Lord in a low voice,

    Daryabadi

    Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying,

    • ﭟ ﭠ ﭡ ﭢ ﭣ ﭤ ﭥ ﭦ ﭧ ﭨ ﭩ ﭪ ﭫ ﭬﭭ

    Transliteration

    qala rabbi innee wahana alAAathmu minnee waishtaAAala alrrasu shayban walam akun biduAAaika rabbi shaqiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee!

    Saheeh International

    He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.

    Shakir

    He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee:

    Daryabadi

    He said: O my Lord! verily the bones of me have waxen feeble, and the head is glistening with hoariness, and have not yet been in my prayer to thee, my Lord, unblest.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    ‘Lord, my bones have weakened and my head has turned hoary with age, but never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to you:

    • ﭮ ﭯ ﭰ ﭱ ﭲ ﭳ ﭴ ﭵ ﭶ ﭷ ﭸ ﭹ ﭺﭻ

    Transliteration

    wainnee khiftu almawaliya min waraee wakanati imraatee AAaqiran fahab lee min ladunka waliyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,-

    Saheeh International

    And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir

    Shakir

    And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir,

    Daryabadi

    And verily I fear my kindred after me, and my wife hath been barren; so bestow on me from before Thee an heir.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself,

    • ﭼ ﭽ ﭾ ﭿ ﮀﮁ ﮂ ﮃ ﮄﮅ

    Transliteration

    yarithunee wayarithu min ali yaAAqooba waijAAalhu rabbi radiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!"

    Saheeh International

    Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."

    Shakir

    Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased.

    Daryabadi

    Inheriting me and inheriting the Children of Ya'qub; and make him, my Lord, acceptable!

    Wahiduddin Khan

    to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you.’

    • ﮆ ﮇ ﮈ ﮉ ﮊ ﮋ ﮌ ﮍ ﮎ ﮏ ﮐ ﮑﮒ

    Transliteration

    ya zakariyya inna nubashshiruka bighulamin ismuhu yahya lam najAAal lahu min qablu samiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before."

    Saheeh International

    [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."

    Shakir

    O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy whose name shall be Yahya: We have not made before anyone his equal.

    Daryabadi

    O Zakariyya! verily We give thee the glad tidings of a boy: his name shall be Yahya; We have not afore-time made his namesake.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    ‘Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name shall be John. We have not given such a name to anyone before.’

    • ﮓ ﮔ ﮕ ﮖ ﮗ ﮘ ﮙ ﮚ ﮛ ﮜ ﮝ ﮞ ﮟ ﮠﮡ

    Transliteration

    qala rabbi anna yakoonu lee ghulamun wakanati imraatee AAaqiran waqad balaghtu mina alkibari AAitiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?"

    Saheeh International

    He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?"

    Shakir

    He said: O my Lord! when shall I have a son, and my wife is barren, and I myself have reached indeed the extreme degree of old age?

    Daryabadi

    He said: O my Lord! in what wise shall there be for me a boy, whereas my wife hath been barren, and surely have reached an age of extreme degree?

    Wahiduddin Khan

    ‘My Lord!’ [said Zachariah], ‘How shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached such extreme old age?’

    • ﮢ ﮣ ﮤ ﮥ ﮦ ﮧ ﮨ ﮩ ﮪ ﮫ ﮬ ﮭ ﮮ ﮯﮰ

    Transliteration

    qala kathalika qala rabbuka huwa AAalayya hayyinun waqad khalaqtuka min qablu walam taku shayan

    Yusuf Ali

    He said: "So (it will be) thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: I did indeed create thee before, when thou hadst been nothing!'"

    Saheeh International

    [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' "

    Shakir

    He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing.

    Daryabadi

    Allah said: even so! Thy Lord saith: it is unto Me easy, whereas surely I created thee afore when thou wast not aught.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    He said, ‘It will be so! Your Lord says, ‘‘It is easy for Me for I created you when you were nothing before.”’

    • ﮱ ﯓ ﯔ ﯕ ﯖﯗ ﯘ ﯙ ﯚ ﯛ ﯜ ﯝ ﯞ ﯟﯠ

    Transliteration

    qala rabbi ijAAal lee ayatan qala ayatuka alla tukallima alnnasa thalatha layalin sawiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb."

    Saheeh International

    [Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."

    Shakir

    He said: My Lord! give me a sign. He said: Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to the people three nights while in sound health.

    Daryabadi

    He said: my Lord appoint for me a sign. Allah said: thy sign is that thou shalt not speak unto mankind for three nights, while sound.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    He said, ‘My Lord, grant me a sign!’ He said, ‘Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body.’

    • ﯡ ﯢ ﯣ ﯤ ﯥ ﯦ ﯧ ﯨ ﯩ ﯪ ﯫﯬ

    Transliteration

    fakharaja AAala qawmihi mina almihrabi faawha ilayhim an sabbihoo bukratan waAAashiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    So Zakariya came out to his people from him chamber: He told them by signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening.

    Saheeh International

    So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon.

    Shakir

    So he went forth to his people from his place of worship, then he made known to them that they should glorify (Allah) morning and evening.

    Daryabadi

    Then he came forth to his people from the sanctuary, and he beckoned unto them. hallow your Lord morning and evening.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening.

    • ﭑ ﭒ ﭓ ﭔﭕ ﭖ ﭗ ﭘﭙ

    Transliteration

    ya yahya khuthi alkitaba biquwwatin waataynahu alhukma sabiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom even as a youth,

    Saheeh International

    [Allah] said, "O John, take the Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy

    Shakir

    O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child

    Daryabadi

    O Yahya! se hold fast the book. And We vouchsafed unto him wisdom, while yet a child.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    To John We said, ‘Hold fast the Book,’ and while he was still a child, We bestowed upon him wisdom,

    • ﭚ ﭛ ﭜ ﭝﭞ ﭟ ﭠﭡ

    Transliteration

    wahananan min ladunna wazakatan wakana taqiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    And piety (for all creatures) as from Us, and purity: He was devout,

    Saheeh International

    And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah

    Shakir

    And tenderness from Us and purity, and he was one who guarded (against evil),

    Daryabadi

    And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious,

    • ﭢ ﭣ ﭤ ﭥ ﭦ ﭧﭨ

    Transliteration

    wabarran biwalidayhi walam yakun jabbaran AAasiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    And kind to his parents, and he was not overbearing or rebellious.

    Saheeh International

    And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.

    Shakir

    And dutiful to his parents, and he was not insolent, disobedient.

    Daryabadi

    And duteous unto his parents, and Was not high-handed rebel.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    and dutiful towards his parents and was not haughty or disobedient.

    • ﭩ ﭪ ﭫ ﭬ ﭭ ﭮ ﭯ ﭰ ﭱﭲ

    Transliteration

    wasalamun AAalayhi yawma wulida wayawma yamootu wayawma yubAAathu hayyan

    Yusuf Ali

    So Peace on him the day he was born, the day that he dies, and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)!

    Saheeh International

    And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive.

    Shakir

    And peace on him on the day he was born, and on the day he dies, and on the day he is raised to life

    Daryabadi

    And Peace be unto him the day he was born and the day he dieth and the day he will be raised up alive.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again.

    • ﭳ ﭴ ﭵ ﭶ ﭷ ﭸ ﭹ ﭺ ﭻ ﭼﭽ

    Transliteration

    waothkur fee alkitabi maryama ithi intabathat min ahliha makanan sharqiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East.

    Saheeh International

    And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.

    Shakir

    And mention Marium in the Book when she drew aside from her family to an eastern place;

    Daryabadi

    And mention thou in the Book Maryam, what time the retired from her people to a place eastward.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    Recount in the Book how Mary withdrew from her people to an eastern place

    • ﭾ ﭿ ﮀ ﮁ ﮂ ﮃ ﮄ ﮅ ﮆ ﮇ ﮈﮉ

    Transliteration

    faittakhathat min doonihim hijaban faarsalna ilayha roohana fatamaththala laha basharan sawiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent her our angel, and he appeared before her as a man in all respects.

    Saheeh International

    And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.

    Shakir

    So she took a veil (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our spirit, and there appeared to her a well-made man.

    Daryabadi

    Then she took beside them a curtain; then We sent unto her Our Spirit, and he took unto her the form of a human being sound.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    and kept herself in seclusion from them. We sent her Our angel, who presented himself to her as a full-grown human being.

    • ﮊ ﮋ ﮌ ﮍ ﮎ ﮏ ﮐ ﮑﮒ

    Transliteration

    qalat innee aAAoothu bialrrahmani minka in kunta taqiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    She said: "I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah."

    Saheeh International

    She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah."

    Shakir

    She said: Surely I fly for refuge from you to the Beneficent Allah, if you are one guarding (against evil).

    Daryabadi

    She said: verily seek refuge with the Compassionate from thee if thou art God-fearing.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    When she saw him, she said, ‘I seek refuge in the compassionate God from you; [do not come near] if you fear the Lord.’

    • ﮓ ﮔ ﮕ ﮖ ﮗ ﮘ ﮙ ﮚ ﮛﮜ

    Transliteration

    qala innama ana rasoolu rabbiki liahaba laki ghulaman zakiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    He said: "Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord, (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son.

    Saheeh International

    He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy."

    Shakir

    He said: I am only a messenger of your Lord: That I will give you a pure boy.

    Daryabadi

    He said: I am but a meenger from thy Lord that I may bestow on thee a boy pure.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    ‘I am only the messenger of your Lord,’ he replied. ‘I shall bestow upon you the gift of a son endowed with purity.’

    • ﮝ ﮞ ﮟ ﮠ ﮡ ﮢ ﮣ ﮤ ﮥ ﮦ ﮧﮨ

    Transliteration

    qalat anna yakoonu lee ghulamun walam yamsasnee basharun walam aku baghiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    She said: "How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?"

    Saheeh International

    She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"

    Shakir

    She said: When shall I have a boy and no mortal has yet touched me, nor have I been unchaste?

    Daryabadi

    She said: in what wise shall there be a boy unto me, whereas not a human being hath touched me, nor have I been a harlot?

    Wahiduddin Khan

    She said, ‘How can I have a son when no man has touched me; and neither have I been unchaste?’

    • ﮩ ﮪ ﮫ ﮬ ﮭ ﮮ ﮯﮰ ﮱ ﯓ ﯔ ﯕ ﯖﯗ ﯘ ﯙ ﯚﯛ

    Transliteration

    qala kathaliki qala rabbuki huwa AAalayya hayyinun walinajAAalahu ayatan lilnnasi warahmatan minna wakana amran maqdiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    He said: "So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us': It is a matter (so) decreed."

    Saheeh International

    He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.' "

    Shakir

    He said: Even so; your Lord says: It is easy to Me: and that We may make him a sign to men and a mercy from Us, and it is a matter which has been decreed.

    Daryabadi

    He said: even so! Thy Lord saith: it is With Me easy, and it is in order that We may make him a sign unto mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is an affair decreed.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    [The angel] replied, ‘So shall it be; your Lord says, “This is easy for Me; and We shall make him a sign to people and a blessing, from Us. This has been decreed.”’

    • ﯜ ﯝ ﯞ ﯟ ﯠ ﯡﯢ

    Transliteration

    fahamalathu faintabathat bihi makanan qasiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    So she conceived him, and she retired with him to a remote place.

    Saheeh International

    So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.

    Shakir

    So she conceived him; then withdrew herself with him to a remote place.

    Daryabadi

    hen she conceived him, and she retired with him to a place far-off.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a distant place.

    • ﯣ ﯤ ﯥ ﯦ ﯧ ﯨ ﯩ ﯪ ﯫ ﯬ ﯭ ﯮ ﯯﯰ

    Transliteration

    faajaaha almakhadu ila jithAAi alnnakhlati qalat ya laytanee mittu qabla hatha wakuntu nasyan mansiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!"

    Saheeh International

    And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."

    Shakir

    And the throes (of childbirth) compelled her to betake herself to the trunk of a palm tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died before this, and had been a thing quite forgotten!

    Daryabadi

    Then the birth-pangs drave her to the trunk of a palm- tree; she said: would that had died afore this and become forgotten, lost in oblivion!

    Wahiduddin Khan

    The pains of labour drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said, ‘Oh, if only I had died before this and passed into oblivion!’

    • ﯱ ﯲ ﯳ ﯴ ﯵ ﯶ ﯷ ﯸ ﯹ ﯺﯻ

    Transliteration

    fanadaha min tahtiha alla tahzanee qad jaAAala rabbuki tahtaki sariyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee;

    Saheeh International

    But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.

    Shakir

    Then (the child) called out to her from beneath her: Grieve not, surely your Lord has made a stream to flow beneath you;

    Daryabadi

    Then one cried unto her from underneath her, that grieve not, thy Lord hath placed underneath thou a rivulet.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    But a voice called out to her from below, ‘Do not despair. Your Lord has provided a brook that runs at your feet,

    • ﯼ ﯽ ﯾ ﯿ ﰀ ﰁ ﰂ ﰃﰄ

    Transliteration

    wahuzzee ilayki bijithAAi alnnakhlati tusaqit AAalayki rutaban janiyyan

    Yusuf Ali

    "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.

    Saheeh International

    And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.

    Shakir

    And shake towards you the trunk of the palmtree, it will drop on you fresh ripe dates:

    Daryabadi

    And shake toward thee the trunk of the palm-tree it shall drop on thee dates fresh and ripe.

    Wahiduddin Khan

    and if you shake the trunk of this palm-tree, it will drop fresh ripe dates on you.
